The armor is made up of M5 fiber and combined with liquid body armor, giving it approximately 7 times the strength of ordinary kevlar, combined with a hardened outer coating which helps fragment and break up the round before entering the soft armor below. Despite being the most advanced armor humanity has to offer and unusually expensive and difficult to mass produce, it only offers minor protection against alien weaponry, and virtually none against the heaviest weaponry the aliens have to offer, even among infantry. Despite it's lack of protection against heavy equipment, it's heat and chemical protection resistance is superior to most other forms of armor and provides medical assistance in the case of injury, substantially increasing the survival of the user even when the armor fails to completely stop a round.
